research document

My second year final project or university was to create a research document based off an essay we were writing and the practical research we were doing at the time. My project was about zines as a culture and creative method to present research and communicate as a community. I was specifically looking into the connections between queer identity and community with alternative music based subculture, as in mine and many others experiences they go hand in hand. I was working with very tactile collage and printing processes so that the making of the art and putting together the zine as an experience was a cathartic ordeal which could be recalled during the reading experience of it once the doc was completed.

monoprint workshop

I was reintroduced to monoprint for the first time since secondary school and it unlocked somehting in my artistic process that I was just waiting for. It let me draw freely and wihtout too much caution (like drawing straight with pen) and encouraged me to be more loose and tactile wiht my illustrations as I had to hold my arm up to not smudge the ink too much. I enjoyed that the outcome was so unpredictable and despite having a vague idea of the image the final piece was only revealed to be a success or not once you lift the paper up and flip it over. I really love the physcial texure o this printing process and how it can be altered by using different paper types or drawing utensils. I feel like i really thrived with this workshop and my overall practice massively benefitted from the outcomes I ended up with after it.

Combining print and collage

After some critiques and feedback I started combining my collage and monoprints and really came into stride developing the visual style for the research document I was putting together.
